Traversing ETHIOPIA'S SIMIEN MOUNTAINS
15 days - A trek to Ras Deshen, Africa's 4th highest peak - Surprising landscapes - Rare wildlife - Sightseeing in Addis Ababa and in the ancient capital of Gondar
Known as "The Roof of Africa," Ethiopia is a land of surprises, with a wealth of superb trekking and a rich cultural heritage. Our fascinating journey into this newly-accessible country is focused on the remote northern region of the Simien Mountains. Comprising several high plateaux bounded by gigantic eroded precipices, this little-visited area is comparable in terms of spectacle to the Grand Canyon. Our 9-day trek follows the ridges and scarps of this national park, traversing a land of natural wonders and of rare wildlife, including the Walia ibex, Simien red fox, the strikingly-maned Gelada baboon and the majestic lammergeier or bearded vulture. We visit several villages en route, notable for their pretty farmland and friendly people. The climax of the trip is the easy scramble to the summit of Ras Deshen, where the views extend northwards to Eritrea. Providing a variety of completely new experiences, Ethiopia is an adventure travel destination for the connoisseur.
