13 days - Trekking through the volcanic wilderness of Oraefi - Remarkable landscapes - An ascent of Hekla - The flowers and birdlife of the short Icelandic summer
Iceland is a weird and wonderful country of great contrast; from the pretty harbours, quaint houses and flower-filled pasture of its coastal strip to the volcanoes, hot springs, glaciers and tortured lava formations of the interior. To show this colourful mix of landscape to best effect, we have devised a trekking itinerary which traverses the southern upland region of Oraefi, passing between the ice-caps of Myrdalsjokull and Torfajokull. Crossing this at times difficult terrain via interconnecting river valleys, we encounter spectacular waterfalls, steaming volcanic fissures and dramatic rock formations. Throughout, we have discreet vehicle support, and group members need carry no more than a small day-pack. As a finale to this tremendous adventure (seismic conditions permitting), we have scheduled an optional ascent of Hekla (1491m.), Iceland's most famous and most active volcano. A short but inspiring trek in a unique landscape.
Duration: 3 nights hotels & lodges, 8 nights camping, 9 days MODERATE trekking, max. altitude - 1491m. Some meals not included.
