At 11.30a.m. on the 29th of May 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest peak on earth. Just 3 years had passed since the kingdom of Nepal first opened its frontiers to the outside world, prompting an influx of awe-struck travellers and ambitious mountaineers which has increased steadily to the present day. There is much more to Nepal than Everest, however. Over more than 5 decades, the country has captured the imagination of the world's travellers.
