OVERLAND to KAILAS - Tibet's Sacred Peak
28 days - Lhasa, Kailas and the north side of Mount Everest - The stunning Potala Palace - 4-day Kailas circuit trek - Colourful Kathmandu - Spring departure coincides with the important Saga Dawa Festival
North
of the Himalayas, in a distant Tibetan province, the strikingly symmetrical
Mount Kailas (6714m.) is revered as the centre of the universe by Buddhists
and Hindus alike. Our epic journey to this remarkable mountain begins with
an exciting flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa, where we spend several days
visiting the city's many famous landmarks, such as the Potala Palace, traditional
home of the Dalai Lamas and the atmospheric Jokhang Temple. Our memorable
drive westwards then takes us across the Tibetan Plateau, via several monastery
towns to Lake Manasarowar and nearby Mount Kailas. Here, in the company
of hardy pilgrims of several faiths, we complete the quite challenging 4-day
trekking circuit around the mountain. Returning overland, we take the opportunity
to make a 2-day visit to the Rongbuk Valley, the spectacular basecamp area
for the north side of Everest, before continuing our journey to Kathmandu.
This a unique travel experience.
Saga Dawa Festival - 3rd June in 2004:
This is the most important of the annual festivals held in the
Kailas region and involves the re-decoration, with prayer flags, of a ten
metre high flag pole. This celebration is attended by hundreds of Tibetan
pilgrims and provides a colourful spectacle, within sight of the south face
of Mount Kailas. The trip will be led by Tibet expert, Bradley Rowe.
