22 days - A reconnaissance in the footsteps of Joseph Rock - Easy-paced 10-day trek - Unspoiled mountain region of China's Sichuan Province - Fascinating towns and monasteries
At the eastern end of the Himalaya on the border between Tibet and China's Sichuan Province, a group of 3 sacred snow-capped peaks holds the secret of Shangri La. First explored by American botanist, Joseph Rock, this mystical and beautiful mountain region was described by him in the July 1931 edition of National Geographic. Arguably, it was Rock's report which influenced James Hilton to introduce the concept of Shangri La in his book "Lost Horizon." Our new 10-day trek follows a Buddhist pilgrimage circuit around the striking peaks of Chanadorje (5948m.), Jambeyang (5948m.) and Chenresig (6032m.). In this pristine area, which sees few Western visitors, we will walk beside clear streams, through abundant larch forest and alpine pasture, to reach prayer-flagged passes. Accessed via the city of Chengdu, this wonderful journey offers an insight into a little-known and culturally very diverse part of the world.
